Shaper Profile: Wade Tokoro’s Pursuit of the Perfect Board

In the world of high-performance surfing, a surfboard is only as good as the understanding behind its creation. For decades, Hawaii’s own Wade Tokoro has built a reputation as one of the most respected and sought-after shapers globally. From local lineups to the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, Tokoro Surfboards are trusted by everyday surfers and world champions alike.

What sets Wade apart isn’t just his skill in the shaping bay—it’s his willingness to test his own designs in the heaviest waves on the planet.

From the Backyard to the World Stage

Wade and his brother, Kerry Tokoro, began their journey shaping boards in their backyard on Oahu. What started as a passionate hobby quickly evolved into an international business based out of Kahaluʻu.

Rather than relying solely on computer models or third-party feedback, Wade has always been a “shaper who rips.” For years, he has been known to charge maxing, 10-foot Pipeline in the early morning hours, getting direct, firsthand feedback on how his rails, concaves, and foam dynamics perform under extreme pressure.

“Feedback from myself is real important ’cause I get it firsthand and I can feel the boards instantly and try to figure it out in my mind what I could do better.” — Wade Tokoro
