About Ala Moana Bowls

Located just off Magic Island and the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor channel on Oahu's South Shore, Ala Moana Bowls (often simply called "Bowls") is the crown jewel of town surfing. It is renowned for its high-performance, rippable walls and a heavy, hollow inside barrel section that breaks over a shallow coral reef.

Here is a breakdown of the break's mechanics, ideal conditions, and hazards, compiled from major surf forecasting and reporting sources:

**Big Bowls:** Once it’s 4ft or bigger, the big bowl starts breaking. It’s best with 6ft S to SW swell, medium tide and light NE tradewinds.”
**Middle Peak:** Where the wave initially stands up on a solid swell. It offers a steep, critical drop and a fast, workable wall ideal for high-performance carving and rail work.
**The Inside Bowl:** As the wave travels down the line and hits the shallower, curved section of the reef near the channel, it accelerates and visually "bowls" out. This section throws a heavy, spiraling tube that is the wave's main attraction.
**The Right:** While predominantly a world-class left, there is a short, punchy right-hander that breaks off the peak directly into the channel. It is a quick, hollow ride that generally closes out fast.

**Boat Traffic:** The surf zone sits directly adjacent to the active Ala Wai Yacht Harbor channel. Surfers caught inside by a wide set can be swept toward the channel markers, requiring them to be hyper-aware of boats and yachts navigating the pass.

Ala Moana Bowls remains the ultimate test of tube riding and rail work on the South Shore, serving as a historic epicenter for progressive Hawaiian surfing and continuing to demand high-level wave-reading abilities to master its fast, wrapping sections.

Local vibe

WelcomingIntimidating

“Be mellow. Paddle out with a smile and sit on the inside. Don’t expect to get the first wave that comes to you; be patient and you will get some really fun waves. They most likely won’t be the sets but the non-set waves are super fun and there will be more opportunities for you. Respect the locals and give way when they paddle, even if you are deeper. There’s always another wave behind and not minding your manners will end your session in a bad way.”

Crowd factor
Heavy
MellowHeavy

The most prominent hazard at Bowls is the intensely congested and highly localized lineup. It is home to some of the best surfers on the island. The local hierarchy is strict, and catching a set wave requires immense patience, respect, and positioning skill.

Hazards

Ala Moana Bowls is a high-performance wave strictly suited for advanced surfers, especially when the swell exceeds head-high.

Access & parking

Easy. Walk the harbor breakwater to end and paddle out the Ala Moana boat channel paddle from the little beach in front of Rockpiles near parking lot.

Bottom

The coral reef is shallow, jagged, and unforgiving, particularly on the inside section. The bottom is also heavily infested with *wana* (long-spined sea urchins), making any wipeout or bottom-contact painful and prone to infection.

Best season

May through September
