Eddie Aikau “The Eddie”

Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational (“The Eddie”)

The Eddie is one of the most prestigious and unique surfing events in the world, characterized by its strict requirements and “soul surfing” roots.

Contest Summary:

  • Location: Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.
  • The “Yellow Light” Rule: The contest is only held when open-ocean swells reach a minimum of 20 feet (translated to wave face heights of 30+ feet). Because of this high threshold, the event has only been held 11 timessince its inception in 1985.
  • The Format: It is an invite-only event. Only 28 big-wave riders are selected to participate.
  • Paddle-In Only: Unlike many modern big-wave competitions, “The Eddie” does not allow jet skis to tow surfers into waves. Surfers must use their own strength to paddle into the massive swells, honoring the traditional waterman style.
  • Cultural Significance: The event begins with a traditional Hawaiian ceremony and a paddle-out, focusing on the “Aloha Spirit” and the community rather than just commercial competition.
