About Pipeline

Located at ʻEhukai Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore, the Banzai Pipeline (often simply called "Pipeline" or "Pipe") is arguably the most famous and dangerous wave in the world. It is renowned for its perfect, heavy, and hollow barreling waves that break over a shallow, cavernous coral reef.

Here is a breakdown of the break's mechanics, ideal conditions, and hazards, compiled from major surf forecasting and reporting sources:

### The Wave and Reef Mechanics

Pipeline is not a single wave but a complex reef system that produces different breaks depending on the swell size and direction. According to **SurferToday**, the system is divided into three distinct reefs:

* **First Reef:** This is the classic Pipeline. It sits in water just 6 to 10 feet deep (sometimes shallower) and produces the iconic, steep, left-breaking barrel. When the peak forms an A-frame, the heavy right-breaking wave is known as **Backdoor**.
* **Second Reef:** Located further outside, this reef activates when the surf reaches 10 to 12 feet. Waves here break a bit softer, allowing surfers to catch massive swells early and set up their line before the wave reforms and bowls over the First Reef.
* **Third Reef:** Situated about 300 yards offshore, this reef only awakens during massive, extreme swells (20+ feet). When Third Reef breaks, it is primarily a tow-in wave and washes out the inner lineup.

To get the perfect, gaping tubes Pipeline is famous for, specific oceanographic and meteorological elements must align. Based on data from **Surf-Forecast.com**:

Because it is the most famous wave on the planet, the lineup is extremely congested during winter swells. Navigating the heavy local hierarchy and intensely competitive crowd requires immense respect and experience.

Hazards

Pipeline is widely considered the ultimate proving ground for professional surfers, but it carries immense consequences. and other surf reports consistently rate it strictly for advanced and expert surfers only. Pipeline remains the pinnacle of high-performance tube riding and continues to host the most prestigious events in competitive surfing, demanding both flawless technique and absolute commitment.

Bottom

The most significant danger is the sharp, jagged lava and coral reef, which is full of caves and crevices. During low tide, there can be just 2 to 3 feet of water between the ocean surface and the razor-sharp bottom. The impact of wiping out here has caused severe injuries and numerous fatalities.
